Medical emergencies are terrifying. The fear and helplessness while someone is suffering, or possibly dying, can be paralysing. As your companion, we want to help. Together with ER24, we have put together these downloadable infographics that explain what to do in some of the most frequently occurring medical emergencies.
If you are ever caught in an emergency situation, always call for emergency assistance immediately. Our clients have access to Emergency Medical Response (EMS), stabilisation and transportation to the nearest suitable hospital facility. Use the USSD panic button *120*15570#
If you are not a Legal&Tax client
You can always dial 084 124 for help from ER24, or dial 112 from your cell phone for emergency services or 10117 for an ambulance.
In cases of sudden cardiac arrest, where the person’s heart has suddenly stopped and there is no discernible pulse, finding and using an AED or Automatic External Defibrillator can make the difference that saves a life. It can keep the patient alive until the emergency services arrive to take over.
Burns are very common and can happen anywhere near fires, stoves, corrosive chemicals, steam or scalding fluids. At high risk for burns, extra precautions must be taken with small children. Burns are measured in degrees of severity from first to third degree and have secondary effects such as shock and possible infection. It is crucial that the source of the burn is first identified swiftly and then removed safely to prevent further damage. Depending on the kind of burn, the treatment will vary, and what treats a heat burn can exacerbate a chemical burn. Contrary to popular belief, never put ice on a burn. It will cause local tissue damage and can cause the body temperature to drop if applied liberally.
This can be especially terrifying because children are not always able to tell us what happened. Not knowing what caused the situation can make us feel more helpless, so calling for professional medical assistance is the most crucial thing to do.
Electricity is extremely dangerous, and electrocution can be life-threatening. The most important thing to remember when someone has been electrocuted is to ensure that the source of the electricity has been turned off. If not, anyone who touches the victim can be electrocuted too.
Seizures can be frightening when you don’t know what is happening, both for the patient and the bystanders. Seizures can be caused by existing conditions such as epilepsy, or by acute onset events such as infections that cause high fevers, which are known febrile seizures. The onset of a seizure can be very sudden, and it can increase in intensity. It is very important to ensure that emergency services are called immediately.
Disclaimer:
The most important thing to remember is that you must call the emergency services immediately so that the patient can receive professional medical assistance as soon as possible. These infographics are here for you to do what you can until the emergency services arrive, they are not substitutes for professional paramedics or medical care.
Each of these infographics is downloadable and can be saved on your phone, should you ever need them.
