We all want the best for our kids. As moms and dads, we work incredibly hard to give our children everything they need for their futures. We balance work and family time so they can achieve their potential and eventually do the same for their own kids. A huge part of that future is dependent on what they get out of their time at school. The helping hand you need is the TeleTeacher benefit.

Education has changed immeasurably since 2020 and the development of the learning process is set to continue at this accelerated rate. With matric finals only two months away, the pressure is on to ensure that they can step up and get the marks they need.

eLearning and online studying are here to stay, but not everyone has the access to infrastructure that an online syllabus requires. Unstable internet connections and power cuts mean that many learners run the risk of being left in the dark if there is no one who can take the time to try and fill in the gaps. While many parents during lockdown stepped up to the challenge of becoming their children’s educators, it was not always the family bonding experience that was hoped for.

Besides what and how kids are taught having changed significantly since most of us were at school, there is another inconvenient fact. Most of us are not teachers. Teachers are trained to be able to encourage learning. This may come as a surprise but telling kids facts and expecting them to repeat them word for word when the exam comes is not teaching. Teaching requires facts, yes, but there needs to be a whole process of engagement with those facts. In order to answer the kind of questions that are expected in the current curriculum, each child has to be made comfortable with the context of why they are learning the content of each particular subject, as well as understand the application of what they are learning outside of their school lives.

It is not a reflection of how much you might love your kids, but unless you have been trained as a teacher or have been home-schooling your kids for some time, finding it frustrating because they aren’t listening, or understanding is perfectly normal.

The fact remains that they are going to need to pass and pass well in order to get into university or any other Further Education and Training (FET) initiatives, so they are going to need some help. Qualified help, which can get expensive. Of course, you want your child to do well, but extra lessons can be hundreds of rands an hour, which can add up with the number of children who need them and how often they need to go.
