COVID-19: You cannot refuse isolation
You will be told to go into quarantine

If you are diagnosed with COVID-19, you will be told to go into quarantine. This means you have to stay in isolation (in a space by yourself) and may not come into contact with other people.

  • If you refuse to do so, you will be breaking the law.
  • A court order will be issued to force you into quarantine.
  • If you are found guilty by a court of having refused quarantine, you might also face 10 years in jail.
  • Remember, the law will protect your rights, but it will also make sure others’ rights are equally upheld.

What to do if you or someone you know may be infected

You have a responsibility to call your healthcare professional and/or the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) on the following numbers in the event that you may be infected or know of someone who may be a risk to themselves or the public:

  • 0800 029 999
  • 0800 111 131

You can also make use of the official government COVID-19 WhatsApp support service. Simply send the message “Hi” to +27 (60) 012 3456
